Essay prompt
“Why I Want to Become a Nurse”
In 500 to 750 words, tell us why you want to become a nurse. Describe what first drew you to the profession and share a personal experience — your own or someone else’s — that shaped that decision. Explain what nursing means to you beyond a job title: what does compassionate care look like in practice? How do you hope to make a difference in the lives of your future patients and their families? Finally, tell us about the kind of nurse you hope to become, and how you plan to carry that vision into your career.
Essay requirements
- Length: 500 to 750 words.
- Format: typed, double-spaced, 12-point standard font, with your name and school on a header or cover page — not in the essay body itself, so reviewing can stay blind.
- Originality: the essay must be your own original work. Essays that are AI-generated or substantially AI-assisted are not eligible, and you certify originality when you submit.
- The essay is worth 35 of the 100 points in our scoring rubric.
How the essay is scored
- Personal voice and authenticity
- Clear explanation of your motivation and your understanding of the nursing profession
- Evidence of compassion, empathy, and patient-centered thinking
- Writing quality — organization, clarity, and grammar
- Adherence to the word count and formatting requirements
